Offenbach dismantles Bayern at the 1974 Bundesliga opener

1. August 1974. First matchday of the Bundesliga – and a result that made football history.

The reigning European Cup champion from Munich traveled with world champions like Sepp Maier, Franz Beckenbauer, Uli Hoeneß, and Gerd Müller. But on this afternoon, the big stage belonged solely to the Kickers from Offenbach.

Winfried Schäfer opened the scoring, and Dieter Schwemmle increased it to 2:0 before halftime. Those expecting a reaction from Bayern instead witnessed an Offenbach football frenzy.

Erwin Kostedde scored shortly after the restart and later added a second goal. Sigfried Held made the debacle complete, before Egon Bihn scored the sixth goal just before the end.
